The St. James Community

If you are ever in the St James area, you need to make sure you stop by some of their well-known local hot spots that serve anything from Asian, Greek, or Middle Eastern cuisine. Since 1957, Rae & Jerry’s Steak house has been a fan favourite for decades. With a menu and interior staying relatively the same, regulars would not have it any other way. Expand your palette by visiting Yafa Caf, an Arabic Street Food and coffee shop located right across from 1800 Portage. Experience authentic Philippine Cuisine at Max’s Restaurant and try their famous signature, tender fried chicken or their ube ice cream. Take a quick 5-minute bus ride down to CF Polo Park shopping mall to get a broader selection of restaurants like Bento Sushi, OPA! Of Greece, Edo Japan – Sushi & Grill, and many more! 

Many new craft breweries have been popping up around the area. One Great City Brewing Company, Torque Brewing, and Half Pints Brewing are just a few of the many local breweries that provide spacious taprooms, and a great venue for their customers. 

As one of the oldest built communities in Winnipeg, be sure to visit any of the five museums located there. See a working replica of a water-powered flour mill, built-in 1829, and learn more about its impact at Grant’s Old Mill. Visit the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada and the Air Force Heritage Museum near the airport to learn more about Canada’s development in the aviation industry during the 1920s. Lastly, if you want more of an outdoor experience, The Living Prairie Museum offers guided tours in their tallgrass prairie reserve harboring more than 160 species of plants. 

Besides its local restaurants, shops, breweries, and history, the neighbourhood also offers fun for the whole family. At the Flying Squirrel Trampoline Park, kids and adults of all ages can burn off some energy by jumping at the World's largest indoor trampoline park. Race against friends and family in real European-styled racing karts at Speed World or bring the kids to the massive three-level structure at Kid City. Walk over the Assiniboine river via the pedestrian bridge to visit the Assiniboine Park and its Zoo. With endless activities and places to go, St James creates a perfect neighbourhood and home for anyone!
